For this week’s Talent Spotlight, Dear Normal sat down with Georgia Holmes to discuss her passion for interior design.
Georgia’s love for interior design began when she was in high school. She recalls moving the furniture around in her room constantly and always wanting to decorate. At the time she didn’t realize that this could formulate into a career, she just did it because she loved it. Once she found out that it could be a career, she saw interior design through a whole new lens.
Georgia has always been crafty and has always expressed her creativity in different ways. From decorating, to painting, to journaling, to even hand crafting art for her living space, Georgia’s creativity reflects in everything that she does. It is for this reason that the idea of interior design as a career interests her so much.
She discusses how she wants to be able to work in every aspect of interior design such as flooring, lighting, and even cabinet design. There is so much of the interior design world to learn and Georgia is set on knowing all of it in order to master her craft. She expresses this interest through her internship at Team Electric Supply as a showroom assistant. She helps in everything the designers need such as attending walk throughs to scout out where the lights will go, helping customers with their design ideas, and even running the company’s social media page where she displays all of the work that they do at the company.
Georgia runs on passion, and that is exactly what she has for interior design. When asked what she loves about it, she says she loves how it has the ability to combine the logical and creative side of her brain and it is worth all of the meticulous detail that it entails. She shows this drive even through her hobbies; for example, she and her boyfriend are currently revamping a camper from 1993. She recalls it being a lot more work than she originally thought, which they discovered when they saw that it was ridden with water damage upon receiving it. It is times like these where Georgia leans on her passion in order to see a project through to the final stages. Even through the struggles of rebuilding the camper, she continues to make mood boards and create plans for the design once the structural part is complete. She says that once it is complete, all of “the blood, sweat, and tears will be worth it.”
When asked if Georgia has a specific style or process that she uses, she jokes and says that it changes from month to month. She continues to say that it changes depending on her environment and what she can do in order to appeal to a specific room. She provides the example of her living room (pictured below) that has “mustardy yellow” walls. She uses the warmth of these walls to create a cozy space for her and her guests. In this way, she does have a process by using her knowledge of color theory and how to play upon what the space is already providing.
To end our interview, Georgia offers advice as to how to get started into designing one’s own space and how to get started with the process of acquiring unique items to make a room feel personalized and special. She starts by suggesting places to shop for any style, such as HomeGoods, Facebook marketplace, and flea markets if you’re willing to do a little digging. But out of all of these options, her biggest secret to her own designs was to go antiquing in your own house. So ask your family to empty out their closet where they store those random pieces of furniture and it might just be your next centerpiece!
And when it comes to creative direction, Georgia encourages using other platforms to gather ideas and make them your own. She frequently uses Pinterest and TikTok for her creative inspiration, then puts a twist on what shesees to create her own personal space.
We are so grateful that Georgia took the time to share her passion with us, and we hope you feel the same! You can take a look at some of her floor plans, peeks at her favorite corners, mood boards, and even the camper in its beginning stages below.
